Can I Laser Engrave My Logo on a T-Shirt?

Let’s see; cotton, flammable and a burning hot laser don’t really go together so laser engraving a T-shirt would most likely result in a smoking pile of ash.

Meet me in Pbiladelpbia?

In the world of promotional products there are a variety of imprinting techniques to decorate an item with your logo or banding message and one method does not always work on all materials. Some items you can choose which imprinting method to use based on how you want the design to look. For example, on metal items such as stainless steel travel tumblers, silk-screening stands out while laser engraving is more subtle.

In a previous blog I explained silk-screening and pad printing and below are two additional ways to brand products with your logo or message:

  1. Emboss/Deboss: Both terms are fairly common and they are really mirror images of each other. Both techniques describe putting a material between dies that leaves a permanent impression in the material. Debossing pushes the image below the level of the material you’re imprinting and embossing pushes the image above the level of the material. Imagine debossing is your logo being pushed into a hole and embossing is your logo being raised and becoming a hill. Both methods are perfect for paper products as well as leather and vinyl. You often see padfolios using one of these methods on the front cover or any soft material that can be pressed between dies. Use these techniques when a subtle and even elegant way of branding a product with a logo is desired. The size of the imprint can also vary depending on the desire for visibility or subtlety.
  2. Laser Engraving: As far back as I can remember, lasers were always related to space adventures like Buck Rogers and Star Wars and just last week the U.S. Navy said they’re testing them for real.   However, there are peaceful uses for lasers and among them is using them to engrave products with a brand or message.  A highly focused light beam is used to heat and burn away the material in the pattern the laser is set to trace leaving a recessed logo, name, tagline or other design. Materials that can be laser engraved include wood, rock, glass, metal and many types of hard plastics and acrylics. Paper and cloth are two products that don’t work well as they tend to disintegrate when hit with a burning hot laser! Laser engraving gives a clean, precise and well-defined look to a logo or other branding and will never rub off or become worn looking. Click on the link below to see a Maglite being laser engraved.

When it comes to imprinting your branded message on a promotional product you’ll find silk-screening, pad printing, embossing/debossing and laser engraving are the most commonly used methods. There are other special decoration techniques used, but if you can grasp the differences between these four methods you’ll be able to speak confidently and understand which method to choose for branding various products you might consider.

One other hint is to always, always, always request a virtual proof prior to having your products produced otherwise you might end up with a faux pas like the one pictured above. Where the heck is Pbiladelpbia anyway?
